Capacity-building Stories is a podcast series brought to you by the Paris Committee on Capacity-building's Network (PCCB Network). This series collects and showcases examples of capacity-building efforts towards combating climate change. The aim is to create a space for capacity-building experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts of the PCCB Network to share their work, experiences, and best practices around climate-related capacity-building.

Capacity-building Stories hopes to turn the wealth of knowledge, experience, and inspiration into learning opportunities for a wider circle of capacity-building actors, and ultimately, into more impactful climate action!

Episode 3 | Human Rights & Climate Change

The third instalment in the series brings our host, Riddhi Dutta, together with Special Rapporteur on Climate, Mr Ian Fry, and Human Rights Officer, Therese Arnesen together for a deep dive into the linkages between climate change and human rights. This episode also explores the capacity-building efforts engaged with by both the Paris Committee on Capacity-building (PCCB) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

In August 2020, the PCCB Network launched a project entitled Capacity-building Stories, which aims to collect and showcase examples of capacity-building efforts to tackle climate change. The series highlighted some of the ongoing efforts of PCCB Network members on a monthly basis till December 2020, hoping to turn this wealth of knowledge, experience, and inspiration into learning opportunities for a wider circle of capacity-building actors, and ultimately, into more impactful climate action.

This series featured a diversity of activities and a range of institutions involved in climate-related capacity-building from across regions and sectors: a storytelling campaign called Voices from the Frontline, an event series at the regional level entitled Capacity-building Knowledge to Action Days, a network of transparency experts in the AFOLU sectors, a public sector network aimed at strengthening capacities of public entities for greater climate action, and finally an analytical framework called Capacity Diagnosis and Development. Find out more about each story under the accordions below.

Special thanks to contributors to this project

stories

Story 1: Voices from the Frontline | ICCCAD & CDKN | August 2020

Simone Albus from the UN Climate Change Capacity-building Team sat down with directors of ICCCAD and CDKN, Saleemul Huq and Shehnaaz Moosa to discuss 'Voices from the Frontline’, their recently-launched initiative in the face of COVID-19 crisis. Voices from the Frontline supports communities across the globe to share their stories about the challenges of facing the pandemic and associated lockdown as well as their responses to it. With special thanks to our outstanding guests for accepting our invitation, we invite you to watch this truly inspiring exchange, and share it widely with your networks!

Story 2: Capacity-building Knowledge to Action Days | NAP Global Network | September 2020

The second Capacity-building Story from the PCCB Network is about a successful series of capacity-building regional workshops: Capacity-building Knowledge to Action Days. Started in the UNFCCC regional climate weeks in the Latin American and the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific in 2019, this series was concluded last week with a virtual event in the African region. These workshops aimed at identifying existing gaps and potential solutions for the development of policy-relevant climate knowledge and the translation of it to climate action through fostering cross-stakeholder collaborations. To celebrate the conclusion of this series, Daniel Morchain from the National Adaptation Plan Global Network gave us a glimpse into this event series, joined by other members of the PCCB Network present in the Africa workshop: colleagues from Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC). With this story, we hope to share the lessons learned from the process, some highlights of discussions, and some food for thought to inspire future dialogues and actions.

Story 3: Transparency in AFOLU sectors Network | FAO | October 2020

The FAO team working on the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement has just launched a new "Transparency in agriculture and land use sectors" network and series of webinars. In this episode of Capacity-building Stories, Mirella Salvatore, FAO Climate Change Officer, shares more insights on how the idea of launching this network came about.

Membership in the network is open to everyone. It is a lively and supportive group of experts and practitioners working to fulfill the requirements of the ETF. The  webinars cover critical topics in implementing the ETF through its modalities, procedures and guidelines (MPGs). They also explore tools and guidance materials that can help countries enhance their capacity and address the ETF requirements.

The network and webinars seek to fill a capacity gap, given the difficulties in organizing face to face capacity development activities due to the COVID pandemic, by offering a virtual space for learning and exchanging knowledge. The network will also feature a discussion group and an online "Roster of transparency practitioners" which can help countries find experts on the subject matter.

Watch the story to find out more, and contact the FAO team at ETF@fao.org for more information.

Story 4: Sustainable Scotland Network | Edinburgh University | November 2020

Sustainable Scotland Network(SSN) is Scotland’s public sector sustainability and climate change network focused on accelerating public sector action towards net zero emissions targets. Members of this network are all major public sector bodies, including local authorities, National Health Service, universities and colleges, as well as interested experts on the topics of adaptation and mitigation to climate change. In this episode of Capacity-building Stories series, Kate Dapre, the Chair of SSN and George Tarvit, the Director of the SSN secretariat sat down with us to answer a few questions about their capacity-building efforts, activities, and vision in Scotland. Enjoy watching!

Story 5: Capacity Diagnosis & Development Matrix | Trioss | December 2020

This episode of Capacity-building Stories features a tool developed by Trioss and Climate Sense entitled Capacity Diagnosis and Development Matrix. The CaDD framework contains metrics that provide insight into the different capacities organisations possess that are required to address the types of climate change challenges that are relevant to them. It also identifies the most effective next steps (and beyond) that are required to improve that capacity if a capacity gap exists.

We sat down with Nick Pyatt, the lead trainer and coach in Climate Sense and director of Trioss, who gave us an overview of this framework and its metrics, explained some applications of CaDD in action, and shared his thoughts on the role of private entities in the advancement of climate ambition and action. Enjoy watching and feel free to share it with other capacity-building experts and learners in your networks!
