Regional Climate Weeks

Regional Climate Weeks 2022 offer a platform to enable regional collaboration, integrate climate action into pandemic recovery and jump start implementation of the Glasgow Climate Pact and Paris Agreement.

Throughout 2022, the Regional Climate Weeks opened opportunities to advance action around decisions taken in Glasgow related to adaptation, mitigation, finance and a common set of guidelines for implementation. Collaboration on these priorities enabled governments and stakeholders to take a significant step together on the road to COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in November 2022. The Regional Climate Weeks 2022 featured three events held at strategic moments ahead of COP27:

  • MENACW 2022 Inaugural Middle East and North Africa Climate Week 2022 held from 28 to 31 March in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
  • LACCW 2022 Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2022 held from 18 to 22 July in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
  • ACW 2022 Africa Climate Week 2022 held from 28 August to 2 September in Libreville, Gabon

Regional collaboration is emerging as a catalyst for global climate action. The Regional Climate Weeks 2022 series convenes stakeholders, government official, experts and activists to explore resilience against climate risks, the transition to a low-emission economy and collaboration to solve pressing challenges. Working together on these topics opens opportunity to address social inequalities and invest in development that is good for humanity and nature.

Regional Climate Weeks 2021

The Regional Climate Weeks 2022 build on momentum from last year – LACCW 2021 in May, APCW 2021 in July and ACW 2021 in September. These virtual events brought together more than 12,000 participants for discussions on advancing climate action.

The Regional Climate Weeks 2021 built momentum towards success at COP26. The Virtual Thematic Sessions took the pulse of climate action in each region, explored climate challenges and opportunities, and showcased ambitious solutions. The Climate Weeks emerged as a platform for regional stakeholders to have their voice heard and contribute to the climate change process.

2021 was a year of strong regional collaboration and concluded with a Global High-Level COP26 Communique Event in Glasgow to recognize the contribution of all stakeholders. The event brought together the COP President, host government ministers, and heads of global organizing partners – UN Climate Change, UN Development Programme, UN Environment Programme and the World Bank. At the event, the organizing partners presented a RCW 2021 COP26 Communique, a Global Overview and three Output Reports to the UK COP26 Presidency as a resource for implementation.

The Climate Weeks were part of a historic year for global climate action at COP26. 2021 was a year we would either lose sight of the Paris targets, or start implementing the Paris Agreement. Building momentum towards COP26 opened opportunity to increase global climate ambition in COVID-19 recovery and kick-start a decade of action.

In 2021, the Regional Climate Weeks focused on three themes:

  • National actions and economy-wide approaches
  • Integrated approaches for climate-resilient development
  • Seizing transformation opportunities

The Regional Climate Weeks (RCWs) inspire individuals and organizations to become part of the momentum created by the global climate agreement in Paris. It is a unique collaborative platform where both governments and non-governmental organizations stakeholders gather to address the gamut of relevant climate issues under one umbrella.

Bringing together diverse stakeholders in the public and private sectors around a common goal of addressing climate change, is the main goal of the RCWs.

The RCWs include series of events that provide space for a grassroots exchange of knowledge and best practices across the region on: Implementation of  Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Global Climate Action (GCA).

Every year, three RCWs are held across the following regions: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Northern Africa.
