Podcast

1. Building climate resilience through microfinance

Adaptation to climate change requires investment to reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience in developing countries. Microfinance helps low-income individuals have access to small loans and financial services to invest and innovate. With climate change-related disasters potentially disrupting economic activity and damaging livelihoods, microfinance can help vulnerable communities build capacity and resilience.  Access to microfinance could further reduce gender inequality by increasing access to economic opportunities for women and providing financial support to increase resilience.

Capacity-building to address climate change in the LDCs

Short info: The importance of capacity building to address climate change cannot be overstated. Globally, about 70% of the developing country NDCs and 83% of the LDC NDCs submitted to the UNFCCC put capacity building as a condition to implement their NDCs. This need for capacity building support overwhelms other kinds of international assistance including for climate finance. Capacity building as a non-politicized agenda under the politically charged UNFCCC process is coming up as a very important issue.

The purpose of the webinar was to have a frank dialogue with the LDC partners to explore the broad capacity needs and gaps to address climate change more effectively. The event followed a brief presentation on capacity building, followed with a panel discussion where designated discussants focused on the importance of the long-term capacity building needs for different stakeholders in the LDCs as well as how this can be achieved.

Capacity-building for climate action and ambition: What have we learned?

Short info: This webinar examined what we have learned from past capacity building initiatives and how we can build on shared experiences to collaborate effectively with vulnerable developing countries in the face of growing inequalities. COVID-19 has deepened the inequalities faced by communities that are on the frontline of any global crisis, including the climate emergency. As we move forward, what can we learn from past capacity building initiatives that support the LDCs to address climate change? This online event brought together stakeholders from four climate capacity building initiatives to reflect on experiences and what that means in a post-COVID world.

Strengthening Indigenous Peoples’ capacity: leadership and rights

Short info: Indigenous peoples are the main agents of environmental conservation, protecting 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. Although there is a significant number of international legal standards protecting their rights, implementation remains a challenge. Additionally, violations of those rights threaten the integrity of many indigenous peoples’ territories and communities. Capacity-building efforts are required to strengthen their leadership capabilities and protect their rights.
This two-part webinar series explores international and regional indigenous human rights frameworks and how they can be applied nationally using specific examples. It highlights the mechanisms through which indigenous peoples’ communities can better access justice as well as practical skills and tools that can be used by indigenous and local communities around the world to safeguard their land and territories.

Effects of mitigation costs and climate damages on inequality

wen2

Short info: What is the prospect for future inequality between countries under climate change? In addition to socioeconomic impacts regarding demography, education and technology progress, climate change will affect future inequality. Analysis of scenarios accounting for these effects of climate change under different emission pathways reveals that climate damage will hit disproportionately poorest countries and mitigation costs will be unevenly distributed among them. Even under low damage estimates, this situation occurs in some scenarios. Thus, mitigation of climate change can be key to limiting future inequality, if mitigation costs do not fall on the poorest countries.

Vulnerability Reduction Credits (VRCs™) enabling better adaptation to climate change

Short info: Adaptation projects may be difficult to prioritize and sustainably finance as the results of projects are difficult to quantifiably measure and compare across project types, and no singular “unit” for adaptation outcomes exists.  The Higher Ground Foundation has been working to develop the Vulnerability Reduction Credit (VRC™), which incorporates cost/benefit analysis and per capita vulnerability equalization tools to measure the outputs of climate adaptation projects, quantifying in a singular unit expected and delivered measures to reduce vulnerability to climate change.

Mechanizing climate resilience in agriculture – The case of smallholder farmers in Paraguay.

Short info: Black Soil provides innovative agricultural extension services, combining the application of starter fertilization and water into the furrow at the time of sowing by its own machine that can be retrofitted to any existing seed drill. The solution increases seed germination rates, makes farmers independent of rain for optimum sowing windows, increases root development and hence drought resilience, as well as increases biomass development and hence reduces evapotranspiration. Results on over 15,000 hectares sown show increases in productivity of 15 – 30% for industrial farmers while significantly cutting fertilizer application, by 40 – 60%.

Integrated Environmental Analysis in Monitoring for Adaptation – Getting the Right Data, Doing Effective Analysis

Short info: Effective climate adaptation actions and policy often require integrated data analysis from sources that are disparate or non-existent.  Multilateral agencies such as the UNFCCC, UNCCD, and UN CBD are critical to global progress on sustainable development and country-level action requires solid and regular information for reporting as well as an understanding of key issues by key stakeholders – civil society included.

In this webinar, the Climate Technology Centre's network partner, Design-Environment (DE), discussed its work in integrated environmental analysis, particularly in Small Island Developing States.  The importance of this evidence-based approach to policy and planning for building the green and blue economies was emphasized.  In addition, DE discussed creative and strategic communications tools for mainstreaming these principles. Applications of Virtual Reality was demonstrated. DE’s work in this area has primarily been in the Caribbean and Central America, but the principles are globally applicable.

Growing internationally-recognized greenhouse gas professionals in your country

Short info: Capacity building programs have helped REDD+ countries start to develop forest carbon monitoring and accounting programs, inventories, and REDD+ reference levels. Yet many countries still lack a sufficient number of domestically trained terrestrial carbon accounting (TCA) professionals.  Carbon accounting helps countries devise appropriate mitigation plans, and is also the core metric to evaluate whether countries’ are meeting their national and international climate change aspirations.  Additionally, countries with more advanced carbon accounting professionals will likely be able to attract more climate finance for their proposals.

This webinar aimed to help countries develop their own national core of GHG experts, for both inventories and mitigation.  Topics included reporting requirements of the Paris Agreement, overview of existing capacities, how to grow a national GHG team, and on-line and in-person ideas for moving forward.

Climate Technology Cluster Development & Innovation Deployment

Short info: Global demand for climate technologies is growing fast and every region is keen to drive local economic development and grow local industries that can meet a portion of this demand both locally and for exports. Often the suitable technologies are developed locally as the local companies really understand the local needs. However, it is often hard for emerging technology companies to compete against the established supply chains and manufacturing scale of larger multi-national companies and so, regardless of technical superiority, many local solutions fail to get deployed.
