The iterative nature of the process to formulate and implement NAPs means that the collection, analysis, synthesis and sharing of information and knowledge are instrumental for learning and enhancing adaptation efforts over time. This section highlights some existing work programmes, knowledge hubs and information platforms under and outside the Convention that complement the information and knowledge shared through NAP Central.
The World Adaptation Science Programme (WASP), which succeeded the Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptations (PROVIA) in 2018, is hosted by the UN Environment Programme. It focuses primarily on the provision of policy-relevant scientific knowledge to support the UNFCCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Green Climate Fund, and the Global Environment Facility, while giving priority to research needs in vulnerable developing countries. The WASP encapsulates the following three components:
- Catalyse bridging current knowledge gaps through e.g. the identification of knowledge gaps and the promotion of relevant research via WASP platforms and partnerships;
- Catalyse bridging potential future knowledge gaps through e.g. the identification of key uncertainties and limitations of current scientific areas and addressing them via WASP platforms and partnerships while taking account of innovative work, emerging trends, and leading –edge thinking;
- Provide policy-relevant guidance through WASP products, e.g. the WASP science for adaptation policy briefs, aiming at filling identified gaps relevant to adaptation planning, implementation, and evaluation.
A flagship event that the WASP co-organizes is the biennial International Adaptation Futures Conference that brings together research scientists, policymakers and practitioners from developed and developing countries to share knowledge about adaptation challenges and opportunities. Participants of these conferences benefit from learning and networking opportunities around a specific adaptation theme that is selected for each conference.
