Humanity’s relationship with nature has fundamentally shifted. We see ourselves as an integral part of – rather than separate from – the natural world. We understand that our lives and livelihoods depend on a healthy, biodiverse planet, and our ethos evolves from striving to minimize our disruptive, harmful impacts on the environment to prioritizing everyday actions that nourish nature. Widespread changes in lifestyle towards sustainability, and the adoption of indigenous values like the Māori’s concept of “Kaitiakitanga,” which position humans as belonging to nature and therefore responsible for safeguarding it, enable this transformation. These values are embedded within political, economic, and social systems around the world and are reinforced in film, music, art, and other forms of mainstream media. Technological advancements complement the growing traditional knowledge base, accelerating the pace and scale of positive change globally. New frontier innovations deliver accessible, real-time information to people, that enable everyone to make choices that benefit local environments and collective well-being. Sustainability is a key fact of political discourse – a key priority accepted by all people, communities and institutions. Leaders across all levels of decision-making work together to prioritize stewardship of the planet, channel funding towards improving ecosystem health, and ensure that these benefits are shared by all, including generations to come. This ethic pushes us to stop relying on gross domestic product as the yardstick by which we measure success and instead adopt a more holistic understanding of well-being. In this future, a resilient, vibrant natural world supports humanity, and we, in turn, deeply care for the environment, sustaining a net-positive effect on our mother Earth.
We would now like to invite you to:
- Imagine: You are a director designing a set for a movie about this desired future. What images came to your mind’s eye as you listened to the description of the Future We Envision? What do you see people doing in their daily lives—in nature, interacting with each other? What devices are they using, and what are they using their devices for? What does nature look like? Take some time and let your imagination build the world.
- Create: We wish we could download your imagination, but we can’t. But if you can hold on to what you have imagined, we want you to give us some hints. Create an image that portrays what you saw in your mind’s eye as you were listening to the audio recording of the Future We Envision.
