Workshop on synergies and cooperation with other conventions
Finland
2 - 4 July 2003
|
Mandate
These combined SBI - SBSTA workshops are being organized in response to a request made by the Conference of
the Parties (COP) and a further request made by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice
(SBSTA).
Mandates of the workshops on synergies and cooperation with other Conventions
The SBI workshop was requested by decision 5/CP.7 of
the Conference of the Parties (COP). The objective of the SBI workshop is to address possible synergies and
joint action with the other multilateral environmental conventions and agreements. These will be covered
through presentations by relevant international entities and detailed discussions on synergies in three
specific sectors: food security, water resources and ecosystems; for which panel discussions will be set up
to promote an interactive dialog among the workshop participants. The outcome of the workshop will be
reported to the Conference of the Parties at its ninth session.
The SBSTA, at its seventeenth session, requested the secretariat, in cooperation with other members of the
Joint Liaison Group (JLG) to organize a workshop as a first step in the process of enhancing collaboration
between the conventions. The objectives of this workshop are to prepare guidance to the national focal
point of each convention and to contribute to enhancing coordination and communication between them; and to
identify options to increase cooperation and capture synergies among the conventions using existing
channels, particularly the exchange of information, in areas such as technology transfer, education and
outreach, research and systematic observation, capacity-building, reporting, and impacts and adaptation.
