Data Interface Help
This page provides a description of the elements of each of the modules of the Greenhouse Gas Data
Interface.
+Time Series - Annex I
This page provides access to predefined GHG emissions/removals data from Annex I Parties. Each
table contains a time series for the selected GHG category for all Annex I Parties. The time series
covers the base year and the period from 1990 to the latest available inventory year. The data on
GHG emissions presented here are only from Annex I Parties because GHG data for the majority of
Non-Annex I Parties are not available for all years of the time series.
The user has the option to export/ download the data in Excel spreadsheet format, which contains
data for each year of the entire time series. However, on the web interface data are displayed at
5-year intervals, as well as the latest two inventory years.
+GHG profiles for Parties
This page provides access to "GHG profiles" for individual Annex I and non-Annex I
Parties, as well as for the major subgroups within Annex I (all Annex I taken together, EIT and
non-EIT). A "GHG profile" is a 2-4 page summary of most representative GHG data (at the
level of national totals) for a Party. The GHG profile for a Party contains the following elements:
- Data table;
- Graph with the trends for GHG totals;
- Graph with sectoral changes in GHG emissions;
- Graph with the GHG shares by gas;
- Graph with the GHG shares by sector.
The user has the option to access the data either in PDF and/or Excel format.
+Detailed data by Party
This page provides access to "Detailed GHG data" for individual Annex I and non-Annex I
Parties, as well as to data on total emissions/removals for the European Union and several groups
of Parties, such as Annex I EIT Parties taken together, Annex I non-EIT Parties taken together, and
all Annex I Parties taken together. “Detailed GHG data” mean that data are presented
for the subcategories of the selected category.
The data are displayed in tabular format depending on the options that the user chooses. The user
has the option to display the data in graphical format as well. (Note: if there are any negative
values for the chosen set of data, then it will not be possible to display the data in a pie
chart).
The layout of the page is shown in the figure below.
As shown, the page contains the following objects:
- dropdown list to select a Party (or an aggregated sum of Parties)
- dropdown list to select the years for which the data should be displayed. The following years
are selected by default “Base year (Convention), 1990 and last year” and the user can
select the combination of other years from the dropdown list.
- dropdown list to select a GHG category (from the list of categories)
- dropdown list to select a greenhouse gas or an aggregated sum of gases
- dropdown list to select a unit.
Upon selecting each of the above objects from the drop down list, the result is automatically
displayed.
The definitions of the objects above are provided in the following sections:
- dropdown list for the "Select Party": contains list of the Parties to the Convention,
including special groups like Annex I, Annex I EIT, Annex I non-EIT, and European Union. The list
is arranged in 3 categories: Groups; Annex I Parties; and Non-Annex I Parties. The Parties are in
alphabetical order within each category.
- dropdown list for the "Select years": The dropdown list contains different sets of
years for data display.

- dropdown list for the "Select unit": contains the list of units of measurement for
GHG emissions/removals. The units are expressed in kilotonnes (kt) for Annex I Parties and in

The user also has the option to download the result of their query in Excel format, CSV format and
printer friendly version (pdf).
+Comparison by gas
This page provides access to detailed GHG emissions/removals data in a presentation by gas, i.e.,
data for individual GHGs (for the category selected by the user) are shown along with the
corresponding GHG totals. The data under this heading is displayed at the level of the selected
category only.
For a selected category, the comparisons can be made between any two Parties (or an aggregated sum
of Parties) for any two years by gas. Please note that, the comparison can be made between Annex I
Parties (or Annex I Parties Group) only and between the Non-Annex I Parties only. The comparison
between the Annex I Party and Non-Annex I Party is not possible as the GHG emissions/removals are
reported using different reporting guidelines.
By default, the data are displayed in tabular form. The corresponding data are also displayed in
graphical forms. There is an option for the user to choose the type of chart (pie/bar chart).
+Comparison by category
This page provides access to detailed GHG emissions/removals data in a presentation by category for
a selected gas in the specified unit, i.e., the emissions/removals of the specified gas are shown
for the selected category along with their breakdown by the configured level of sub-categories.
Note that for Party and year selection two unique selections should be made (1st Party, 2nd Party,
and 1st year, 2nd year), so that comparisons between Parties and years can be provided.
Please note that the comparison can be made between Annex I Parties (or Annex I Parties Group) only
and between the Non-Annex I Parties only. The comparison between the Annex I Party and Non-Annex I
Party is not possible as the GHG emissions/removals are reported using different reporting
guidelines.
By default, the data is displayed in tabular form. The corresponding data is also displayed in
graphical forms. There is an option for the user to choose the type of chart (pie/bar chart).
+Global Maps - Annex I
This page provides access to greenhouse gas (GHG) data for Annex I Parties in a "map"
format which complements the same data presented elsewhere on the UNFCCC data interface in tabular
and graphical formats. Information is provided on anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals
by sinks of the seven principal GHGs for the period from the base year to the latest available
year, which is usually 2 years before the current year.
Only key GHG data, such as national totals and emissions/removals for the major
sectors/sub-sectors, are provided in this part of the GHG data interface. For more detailed
information, other parts of the interface should be used, such as "Detailed data by
Party".
By default, the map shows changes in total aggregate GHG emissions (including emissions/removals
from the LULUCF sector) between the base year defined under the Climate Change Convention and the
latest available year. To display other data, the user should select options from the three
dropdown lists, as shown below. In essence, a combination of sector/subsector, gas and year has to
be selected. Depending on the selections made, the appearance of the map and the list below it are
automatically updated.
The map is interactive so that with the use of the scroll bars, one can move the view of the map
up, down, to the right or to the left, and also zoom it in or out. There are markers attached to
countries; when the cursor is placed on a marker, information on total GHG emissions for that
country is displayed. Note that such markers become visible only when the resolution of the map is
sufficient; for example, to see markers for relatively small countries one has to zoom in the map
sufficiently.
The list underneath the map is by default sorted by value in ascending order. To change the sorting
order (such as sorting by Party name), click on one of the sorting options (see the screenshot
below). The Party names on the list, as well as the tags on the map, link to the emission details
for that Party, which includes: (1) a summary table by sector and (2) a graphical representation of
the contribution of each sector to the national total including LULUCF.
The 'Full report' is a hyperlink to the GHG profile (in PDF) for that Party.
The definitions of the different fields used in the map are as follows:
- Sector or sub-sector: GHG emissions/removals estimates are presented in accordance with the
categories (sectors, sub-sectors or even more detailed categories) as defined in Revised UNFCCC
reporting guidelines on annual inventories for Parties included in Annex I to the Convention in
accordance with decision 24/CP.19. For methodological reasons, although GHG emissions from
international bunkers (aviation and marine) are included in the list of the sectors, those
emissions are excluded from national totals. In addition to the sectors and/or sub-sectors, GHG
emissions/removals data are also presented for total GHG emissions or “totals”. There
are two kinds of totals: total emissions with LULUCF or “net total emissions”, and
total emissions without LULUCF or “gross total emissions”. LULUCF stands for Land Use,
Land-use Change and Forestry, and is the only sector that may emit into or remove GHGs from the
atmosphere depending on whether the sector or sub-sector is a source or a sink.
- Gas: In estimating the national anthropogenic GHG emissions by sources and removals by sinks,
eight gases carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide
(N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), unspecified mix of HFCs and
PFCs, sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) are taken
into account. The term "aggregate GHGs" refers to a sum of these seven gases; the sum is
taken using the so-called Global Warming Potentials (GWPs) of each gas. The use of GWPs converts
emissions/removals of various GHGs into the so-called CO2 equivalent.
- Inventory Year: In addition to the emissions time series from 1990 to the latest available
year, the users also have the option to select a series with changes from the base year to the
latest available year, and a change over the period 1990 to the latest available year. The base
year for Annex I Parties under the Climate Change Convention is normally 1990 but some Parties are
allowed to use a base year other than 1990. These Parties and their base years are Bulgaria (1988),
Hungary (average of 1985-1987), Poland (1988), Romania (1989) and Slovenia (1986).
- Color legend: The color legend bar shows the relationship between the colors in the map and the
values. The color gradients ranging from light purple to blue indicate absolute emissions (if
emissions data are displayed on the map) or positive growth (if a trend is displayed); those
ranging from light to dark green indicate carbon sinks (for emissions/removals data) or negative
growth (for trend data); and yellow nuances indicate growth rates close to 0%. For the LULUCF
sector, the gradients of green show removals, while the gradients of purple show emissions. The
scale of the bar dynamic and is dependent on the range of values for a category/year selection.
