At COP 8 Parties requested the SBSTA to enhance cooperation with the subsidiary
bodies of the UNCCD and CBD, and urged the JLG to continue its efforts to enhance coordination
between the three conventions and their secretariats. The COP affirmed the need to invite the
secretariat of the Ramsar Convention to share information and to participate in the meetings of the
JLG, as appropriate.
SBSTA 19, among others, encouraged Parties to make use of the Report on
Interlinkages between Biological Diversity and Climate Change prepared by the Ad-hoc Technical
Expert Group on Biological Diversity and Climate Change of the CBD.
For SBSTA 20, the Report
of the fifth meeting of the JLG was made available to Parties. SBSTA 20
concluded by recommending a draft conclusion to the COP, which was adopted by the COP at its 10th
session. This conclusion requested the secretariat to provide information to the JLG on relevant
activities that are mutually supportive of the objectives of the three Conventions and encouraged
Parties to enhance coordination at the national level by facilitating involvement of national experts
and sharing relevant information at the local and national levels.
In response to a request from the SBSTA, the secretariat made available at SBSTA 21
(December 2004), a paper on options for enhanced cooperation among the Rio Conventions (FCCC/SBSTA/2004/INF.19),
which was prepared jointly by the secretariats of the CBD, UNCCD and UNFCCC. This options paper was
considered by the JLG at its sixth meeting (October 2005, Bonn).
At SBSTA 23 (November/December 2005) the secretariat provided a report on the
outcome of the consideration of the options paper by the JLG, after which Parties submitted their
views on this matter (see FCCC/SBSTA/2006/MISC.4
) for consideration at SBSTA 24. Both the options paper and the views expressed by
Parties were welcomed by SBSTA 24.
SBSTA 26 noted with appreciation statements by representatives of the FAO, the World
Bank, UNDP, the CBD, the UNCCD secretariat and UNEP on their activities and efforts to address
climate change and their contributions to the work of the Convention. The SBSTA also noted with
appreciation a statement by the representative of the IPCC on the status of the IPCC Fourth
Assessment Report (AR4) and welcomed the in-depth briefing held on 12 May 2007 on the reports of the
three IPCC working groups.
SBSTA 28 took note of the statements by representatives of the IPCC and the
secretariat of the UNFF. The SBSTA also took note of written statements made available by the
secretariat of the CBD and by the IFRC.
At SBSTA 30, the Executive Secretary provided
information on cooperative activities and efforts by United Nations entities and intergovernmental
organizations to address climate change and to contribute to the work of the Convention. These
include activities undertaken under the Joint Liaison Group between the CBD, the UNCCD and the
UNFCCC.
With reference to the information provided by the Executive Secretary, the SBSTA requested the
secretariat to prepare, before sessions at which that agenda item is taken up, an information paper
summarizing relevant cooperative activities, to enable Parties to comment on this information, as
appropriate (FCCC/SBSTA/2009/3,
paras 126-128).
Since then, the Secretariat has reported to the SBSTA on such activities:
SBSTA 32 noted with appreciation the information paper prepared by the secretariat,
and noted the information provided on the cooperative activities and efforts of United Nations
entities and intergovernmental organizations to address climate change and contribute to the work
under the Convention. (FCCC/SBSTA/2010/6,
paras 109-113).
SBSTA 34 noted with appreciation the information paper prepared by the secretariat
to summarize cooperative activities and efforts by United Nations entities and other
intergovernmental organizations to contribute to the work of the Convention. The SBSTA took note of
the focus of the cooperative activities and initiatives currently being undertaken by the secretariat
with the support of the United Nations system and other intergovernmental organizations to ensure
effective implementation of the Convention. (FCCC/SBSTA/2011/2,
paras 110–115).
SBSTA 36 also noted with appreciation the information paper prepared by the
secretariat. It also recognized the resources and expertise that other intergovernmental and
international organizations have and that are relevant to the UNFCCC process and encouraged the
secretariat to seek support, where appropriate, from relevant international organizations and to work
in partnership with these towards the effective implementation of the Convention. (FCCC/SBSTA/2012/2,
paras 131–136).
SBSTA 38, noted with appreciation the information document prepared by the
secretariat in the same terms as SBSTA 36. (FCCC/SBSTA/2013/3
, paras 189–194).
SBSTA 40 welcomed the document and requested the secretariat to strengthen its
collaboration with international organizations in implementing the activities referred to in decision
1/CP.19, paragraph 2(d), according to which, organizations in a position to do so were requested to
provide support to Parties in their domestic preparations for their intended nationally determined
contributions. (FCCC/SBSTA/2014/2,
paras 205-210).
SBSTA 42 welcomed the document and reaffirmed the importance of the secretariat
engaging with other intergovernmental organizations as appropriate, in particular United Nations
entities, with the aim of focusing on actions that support the effective implementation of the
Convention and its Kyoto Protocol as well as of recent UNFCCC decisions (FCCC/SBSTA/2015/2,
paras 86–89)
SBSTA 44 took note of the document FCCC/SBSTA/2016/INF.3
containing the summary of the secretariat's cooperative activities with other intergovernmental
organizations (FCCC/SBSTA/2016/2,
paras 112–113).
