Many important decisions and activities have taken place in the development of the current adaptation agenda under the UNFCCC.

At COP 7 (2001), Parties adopted Decision 5/CP.7. This elaborated activities to implement Article 4.8 and 4.9 of the Convention. It included the establishment of the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Work Programme.

At COP 10 (2004) Parties adopted Decision 1/CP.10 (taking into account activities under Decision 5/CP.7).  This included provisions, within the Buenos Aires programme of work, to respond to the adverse effects of climate change as referred to in Article 4 of the Convention.

Activities under these decisions generated an important knowledge base on impacts and vulnerabilities and adaptation practices, gaps and needs, which led to the development of the current workstreams and groups & committees.

2011

The SBI mandated a workshop to identify challenges and gaps in the implementation of risk management approaches to the adverse effects of climate change

2008

• The SBI mandated a review of experiences, best practices and lessons learned on risk management approaches and other appropriate responses to the adverse effects of climate change
• An Adaptation funding interface was mandated to show the funds available for adaptation, including for the implementation of NAPAs. (For the latest information currently available on climate finance see The Finance Portal for Climate Change)

2006-2007

A series of workshops in Africa, Asia, Latin and Central America and an expert meeting in Small island developing States (SIDS) facilitated information exchange and integrated assessments to assist Parties in identifying adaptation needs and concerns
